US Treasury Tackles Quantum Computing Threat with New Task Force
The US Treasury has launched its Quantum-Readiness Task Force to address the growing threat of quantum computing on digital assets. This task force is part of a broader effort to secure the country's financial system against emerging technologies. The initiative brings together government agencies, financial institutions, market infrastructure operators, and technology providers to identify critical cryptographic dependencies and prepare for implementation challenges.
The task force follows President Donald Trump's executive order in June that accelerated the federal government's transition to post-quantum cryptography. This order calls for high-value and high-impact federal systems to adopt post-quantum key establishment by December 31, 2030, and post-quantum digital signatures by December 31, 2031.
Notably, parts of the crypto industry had already begun preparing for this threat. Coinbase's independent quantum advisory council estimated that about 7 million Bitcoin are currently considered potentially vulnerable because their public keys are exposed through older address formats or address reuse.
