US Tweaks Sanctions to Allow Iranian Airlines, Fails to Loosen Grip on Crypto

The US Treasury Department has made a targeted adjustment to its sanctions architecture against Iran by removing three Iranian airlines and two associated aircraft from counterterrorism sanctions. The delisting targets aviation assets, not digital finance infrastructure, and comes after the Treasury sanctioned Nobitex, Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange, for its IRGC connections in June 2026.

The move represents a selective adjustment to Washington's sprawling sanctions against Tehran. The three airlines and two aircraft were previously designated due to their links to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under Executive Order 13224, the legal framework used since the post-9/11 era to target entities tied to terrorism financing.

The delisting has minimal direct impact on crypto markets or digital asset prices. No tokens are affected, no exchanges are being unsanctioned, and no frozen wallets are being released. The Treasury views crypto exchanges as critical nodes in sanctions evasion networks, demonstrated by the Nobitex sanctions in June 2026.
