US vs Iran: Two Different Paths for Cryptocurrency Adoption
The US government is seeking to prevent Iran from using cryptocurrency to evade sanctions, while simultaneously pushing to integrate crypto into the mainstream financial system.
According to Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis company, the Iranian crypto ecosystem has grown significantly in 2025, with an estimated value of over $7.78 billion. However, this growth is closely tied to economic and geopolitical pressure, as the country's economy has been weakened by high inflation and capital controls.
The US government has taken steps to target exchanges, issuers, wallets, intermediaries, and financial systems that connect Iran's crypto activity to the rest of the world. For example, the US Treasury's OFAC sanctioned several Iranian crypto exchanges, including Nobitex, and warned foreign banks and other non-US parties about potential sanctions risks.
The situation highlights a stark contrast between the US and Iran's approaches to cryptocurrency adoption. While the US is pushing for greater regulation and integration of crypto into traditional finance, Iran is using crypto as a workaround for its isolated economy.
