USDC Dominates AI Agent Payments as Stablecoin Adoption Surges
Circle's USDC stablecoin has become the go-to settlement asset for AI agents, accounting for 99.3% of payments processed through the x402 protocol in Q2 2026.
The x402 protocol enables autonomous software agents to make transactions without human approval, and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said that USDC's dollar-denominated stablecoin makes it suitable for these transactions due to its fast, inexpensive, and predictable nature.
USDC circulation reached $73.3 billion by the end of Q2 2026, a 19% annual growth, while quarterly transaction volume increased 151% year over year to $14.8 trillion.
Circle is expanding USDC use across AI agents, retail, and global payments, with Allaire identifying cross-border settlement, capital markets, and retail payments as important growth opportunities for the stablecoin.
