USDC Faces Quantum Risk as Circle Issues Warning on Vulnerability
The USDC stablecoin may be vulnerable to quantum attacks due to its slowest wallet, bridge, or blockchain. According to Circle, a warning has been issued that the quantum circuits needed to attack widely used blockchain signatures are becoming more efficient, with a record of 813 logical qubits achieved in August.
Circle's current contract documentation contains 37 mainnet USDC rows and the company can protect its infrastructure, but it cannot rotate a customer's private key or change the signature rules of Ethereum, Solana, XRPL, or any other host. A migration to secure Circle's own keys while leaving old wallets, bridges, or base-layer paths exposed would not secure the whole footprint.
Circle recommends that developers inventory their cryptography, identify vendor dependencies, and prepare key rotation as a quantum-safe solution is developed.
