$USDC Issuer Circle Secures NY Trust Charter Amid Crypto Regulatory Push
Circle Internet Group, Inc., the issuer of $USDC, has secured a limited purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This marks another significant regulatory milestone for the company, which was also the first to receive a BitLicense from NYDFS nearly six years ago.
The trust charter allows Circle to provide fiduciary, custody, and asset-management services under the New York Banking Law. Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Circle, stated that earning this charter has been a 'longstanding objective' for the company due to the regulatory clarity it provides.
Circle's recent approvals from NYDFS and the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) are part of a growing trend in the crypto industry, with several other firms, including Coinbase, Moonpay, Bitgo, and Paxos, having also secured limited purpose trust charters.
The company's national trust bank, which received approval from OCC earlier this month, will 'enhance the safety and regulatory oversight of the $USDC Reserve' while enabling Circle to offer fiduciary digital asset custody services to institutional customers.
