USDC, short for USD Coin, is a stablecoin designed to maintain a value equivalent to one US dollar. Created in 2018 by Circle and Coinbase through their joint project Centre Consortium, it's backed by real cash and short-term US government bonds held in reserve.

Unlike Bitcoin, whose price fluctuates constantly, the value of USDC remains relatively stable, making it an attractive option for traders, businesses, and individuals alike. It's also versatile, with smart contracts on various blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana, and Algorand ensuring fast and cheap transactions.

In 2023, Circle took sole control of managing USDC after Centre Consortium was shut down. This move has boosted trust in the stablecoin, as Circle provides transparent monthly reports detailing the reserves backing every coin issued. The process of minting new USDC is straightforward: when a dollar is deposited with Circle, a corresponding amount of USDC is created.
