USDC Transaction Volume Soars as Circle Misses Revenue Estimates

Circle's quarterly earnings report shows that its stablecoin USDC is continuing to gain traction. The on-chain transaction volume of USDC surged to $14.8 trillion during the second quarter, a 151% increase year over year.

This growth, however, was not enough to meet Wall Street's revenue expectations. Circle reported total revenue and reserve income of $701 million, falling short of the estimated $717.5 million. The main culprit behind this miss was lower reserve yields, which declined by 66 basis points to 3.5%.

Circle's reliance on interest earned from its reserves is a major challenge for the company's business model. As interest rates remain low, the income generated from these reserves is being reduced, making it difficult for Circle to meet revenue projections.

The company is working to diversify its revenue streams by expanding into payments and blockchain infrastructure. Revenue from these areas increased 41% to $34 million during the quarter, with the Circle Payments Network reaching an annualized transaction volume of $14.7 billion.
