USDT Adoption Surges in Countries Hit by Currency Instability
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino says that USDT adoption is growing in several countries due to currency instability. In an August 23 post, he noted that people in Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, and Turkey are turning to the stablecoin as their local currencies lose value and physical dollars become scarce.
Ardoino wrote that 'the economies of several developing countries rely heavily on USDT, both for domestic and foreign trade.' He also emphasized Tether's mission of financial inclusion, stating it is more important than ever.
In Turkey, high inflation has led many users to hold USDT as a way to protect their savings. In Argentina, monthly inflation hit 3.4% in March 2026 following currency depreciation. Peer-to-peer USDT trading has become common among Argentines looking to hold dollar-denominated value.
In Venezuela and Bolivia, local businesses use USDT for retail payments and import/export settlements. The stablecoin operates alongside bolivars, physical dollars, and other digital assets in what observers describe as a hybrid currency economy.
