USDT Defies EU MiCA Headwinds with Strong Global Demand
The global demand for Tether's USDT stablecoin has proven to be resilient despite regulatory pressure in the European Union. In December 2024, the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework came into effect, requiring stablecoin issuers like USDT to obtain authorization and maintain adequate reserves to operate within the EU. As a result, several exchanges including Coinbase and Kraken delisted USDT for their European customers to ensure compliance.
However, data from Artemis suggests that MiCA has not caused a clear change in USDT supply, demand, or cross-chain movement globally. This indicates that while regulatory shifts may affect availability in specific regions, the global market for USDT continues to function robustly.
In emerging markets such as Argentina, Turkey, and Nigeria, where inflation rates are high and currency devaluation is common, residents often turn to USDT to protect their wealth and conduct everyday transactions. The token's peg to the US dollar provides a sense of security that local fiat currencies cannot offer.
