USDT Demand Holds Steady Amid EU Regulatory Crackdown
The global demand for Tether's USDT stablecoin remains robust despite regulatory pressure in one of the world's major economic blocs. According to Alex Weseley, a researcher at Artemis, market data suggests that MiCA has not caused a clear change in USDT supply, demand, or cross-chain movement.
MiCA, which came into full effect in December 2024, introduced comprehensive regulatory requirements for crypto-asset issuers and service providers operating in the EU. Under these rules, stablecoins like USDT must obtain proper authorization and maintain adequate reserves to be offered to EU-based users. Consequently, several exchanges have delisted USDT for their European customers to ensure compliance.
The resilience of USDT demand highlights the broader trend of stablecoin adoption as a fundamental component of the digital asset ecosystem. While MiCA aims to bring regulatory clarity and consumer protection to the EU, its impact appears limited to regional market dynamics rather than altering the global trajectory of stablecoin usage.
