USDT Stablecoin Surges in Developing Markets Amid Currency Uncertainty
Tether's USDT stablecoin is increasingly being used in developing markets as a workaround for local currency devaluation, dollar shortages, and financial restrictions. According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, adoption of USDT is expanding across Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, and Turkey.
In these countries, USDT is not primarily used for speculative trading but rather for settling trade and hedging against inflation. In Venezuela, importers and exporters are using USDT to settle invoices, while in Bolivia, the token is being used in commercial transactions.
The use of USDT as a stable store of value is particularly prevalent in Argentina, where capital controls have pushed savers towards dollar-like instruments that can be held outside the banking system. Similarly, in Turkey, the lira's depreciation has made holding local-currency savings costly, leading to increased demand for stablecoin exposure.
