USDT Stablecoin's Global Reach Channels Demand for US Government Debt
Tether's USDT stablecoin has become a global dollar network used by over 530 million people, making its issuer an unlikely intermediary in channeling demand for U.S. government debt.
The stablecoin's scale is central to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino's argument that USDT effectively distributes U.S. debt ownership across hundreds of millions of users, rather than having it concentrated among foreign buyers.
However, the distinction between direct and indirect exposure to U.S. Treasury bills remains, with Tether holding approximately $141 billion in reserves, while users hold USDT tokens that indirectly give them dollar exposure without owning Treasury securities themselves.
