USDT Users Not Direct Owners of Treasury Bills, Despite Paolo Ardoino Claims
Tether's USDT stablecoin has created a unique situation in the market. According to Paolo Ardoino, Tether CEO, the company has effectively decentralized ownership of US debt by having hundreds of millions of users holding US Treasuries through their reserves.
This concept is based on the idea that unlike foreign governments, these users are unlikely to sell US debt en masse, thereby reducing concentration risk. However, this claim has been disputed as Tether's documents actually show that users own transferable tokens denominated in dollars, not actual Treasury bills.
Tether's reserve assets are owned and managed by the company itself, and users have a personal contractual right to redeem their tokens at face value, less fees. This means that holders are not entitled to any gains above token face value from the portfolio, which is invested in Treasuries.
