Validator Counts Misleading Decentralization

THORChain has raised questions about the validity of using validator counts as a measure of decentralization. According to the network, hundreds of validators can still mask centralized control if they operate from the same data centers or are controlled by the same entities.

The network emphasizes that operator independence and open participation are more important than validator numbers alone in determining decentralization. This means that even with a large number of validators, if those operators are not independent and cannot join without permission, it may not be decentralized.

THORChain co-founder Chad Barraford has argued that a blockchain can have hundreds of validators and still remain centralized through shared operators and infrastructure. The network argues that validator totals reveal little unless those participants operate independently and can join without permission.
