Violent Crypto Attacks Reach $30M in 2026
Crypto attacks, often referred to as 'wrench attacks,' have reached alarming levels in 2026. According to Chainalysis, over $30 million has been stolen through violent means during the first half of this year.
The analytics firm documented 46 such attacks through late June and noted that victims lost more than $30 million in total. Wrench attacks involve the use of threats or physical violence to force cryptocurrency holders to hand over their assets.
The majority of these incidents, at 37%, were home invasions. Kidnappings remain the most common type of attack, but they have become less frequent compared to home invasions. Chainalysis found that attackers are increasingly targeting family members and using various methods to launder stolen funds.
