Violent Crypto Attacks Steal Over $30M in First Half of 2026
Crypto-related violent attacks have stolen over $30 million worldwide during the first half of 2026, according to Chainalysis. This number is expected to challenge the record $58 million stolen in 2025, but it's likely an underestimate due to underreported cases.
The success rate for these attacks has decreased from 67% in 2024 and 49% in 2025 to 26% in 2026. Chainalysis estimates that attempted extractions, including blocked transfers, unpaid ransom demands, and recovered funds, have reached an estimated $107 million during the first half.
The report highlights a shift in attack tactics, with home invasions increasing from 14% in 2025 to 37% of documented cases in 2026. Kidnappings accounted for 52% of incidents, and relatives or acquaintances were targeted in approximately 25-30% of cases.
France has emerged as the global hotspot for crypto-related violent attacks, with 30 publicly known cases by midyear and a total of 77 crypto-linked kidnappings and detentions recorded nationally. Chainalysis attributes the French surge to compromised personal data, citing allegations of tax officials selling dossiers containing investors' information.
