Virtual Asset Industry Sees Large-Scale Restructuring Amidst Over 100 Project Shutdowns
The virtual asset industry is undergoing a large-scale restructuring, reminiscent of the dot-com bubble collapse in the early 2000s.
A total of 122 projects have broken down or suspended operations between March 20 and August 6 this year, according to data analyst RootData's '2026 Virtual Asset Disclosure Project List.'
The list includes popular platforms such as Spark, Triple O Games, xHaven, Vite, and Unciphered, as well as exchanges like DEX, TropicalSwap, CEX, Venkate Exchange, loan protocols Avon and Levi, XRPL-based DeFi service Strobe Finance, and virtual asset research and advisory firm Hazeflow.
The Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem is particularly noteworthy, with general-purpose Layer 2 chains failing to differentiate themselves and being organized in large numbers due to bankruptcy. Ben Fish, CEO of Espresso Systems, said, 'There are too many general-purpose Layer 2s, so it's meaningless as a product.'
In contrast, projects that generate actual cash flow and secure a solid user base continue to thrive. Decentralized Futures Exchange HyperLiquid has topped $1 billion in cumulative fees, while Aave maintained $12 billion in deposits as of July.
