Vitalik Backs Bitcoin-Inspired Scaling Plan for Ethereum
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed admiration for Bitcoin's UTXO model, which could influence Ethereum's future architecture. In a recent post on X, Buterin credited 'Bitcoiners' with pioneering ideas that have the potential to improve Ethereum's scalability without compromising decentralization.
The proposed hybrid scaling strategy for Ethereum combines UTXO-style state, dynamic state, and models in between, aiming to allow most activity to be 'hyperscaled' while maintaining decentralization, ease of running nodes, and censorship resistance. Native UTXOs could reduce permanent state usage by 99.8% for one-time payments.
The proposal uses EIP-8141 Frame Transactions for spending UTXOs, which would allow a UTXO to cover its own transaction fees, eliminating the need for users to hold ETH in separate accounts before spending funds. This concept remains under research and is not yet confirmed as an Ethereum upgrade.
