Vitalik Backs I-Star Upgrade Proposal for Quantum-Safe Transactions
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is backing a proposal called EIP-8288, which aims to improve the efficiency of quantum-safe transactions on the Ethereum network. The proposal uses recursive STARK aggregation to bundle cryptographic proofs together, reducing the cost of verifying private transactions from millions of gas to tens of thousands.
The Ethereum Foundation is targeting full quantum resistance by December 2029 and has made this deadline non-negotiable until January 2027. Buterin hopes EIP-8288 can be included in I-Star, the next major upgrade after Hegota.
EIP-8288 proposes a system where transactions use lightweight dependency frames to carry information about signatures or proofs instead of full cryptographic data. This would allow for one proof to represent many transactions at once, reducing the cost and complexity of verification.
