Vitalik Buterin Doubts AI Will Break Bitcoin
Crypto commentator Liron Shapira has expressed concern that artificial intelligence could cause Bitcoin to lose half its value within two years. He cited AI's potential to undermine what people consider to be Bitcoin's security guarantees, specifically its hashing and proof-of-work.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, disagreed with this assessment. According to him, the chances of AI breaking Bitcoin's hashing or proof-of-work are 'tiny'. He also emphasized that managing the transition itself is the main risk, not a cryptographic failure.
Buterin believes that Bitcoin can handle network-layer problems, such as upgrading clients or mining pools, without needing broad social consensus. However, Shapira updated his estimate to 40% after considering Buterin's argument and another commentator named Eliezer.
