Vitalik Buterin Fires Back at Bitcoin AI Security Fears

Bitcoin's AI security debate is heating up as Liron Shapira, host of the Doom Debates podcast, claims there's a 50% chance the cryptocurrency could crash by over 50% within two years due to AI-driven loss of confidence.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum and a prominent voice in the crypto space, responded directly to Shapira's claim. He noted that roughly 90% of his net worth is invested in cryptocurrencies, effectively making him a bettor on the asset's long-term prospects.

Buterin separates Bitcoin's threat surface into two categories: patchable client/network vulnerabilities and a genuine break of SHA-256 or proof-of-work itself. He puts the probability of the latter at 'a tiny bucket', noting that any fix would require a hard fork and broad consensus.

In contrast, he says that cryptography is rapidly advancing, with significant progress expected in areas like SNARKs and fully homomorphic encryption by 2026. In fact, Buterin estimates there's a 33% chance all three Egyptian God Protocols (SNARK, FHE, iO) could eventually be implemented with near-zero overhead, and a 60% chance they'll reach single-digit overhead.
