VoltCore Begins Utility Work on Bitcoin Mining Center Despite Morgan County Moratorium
Utility work has begun at a planned Bitcoin mining center in Somerville, Alabama, despite a county moratorium intended to send a message to the project's developer, VoltCore. Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long explained that the moratorium carries no enforcement power and that the county lacks legal authority to stop the project.
Long stated that Morgan County has no zoning laws or regulations in rural areas, giving VoltCore free rein to conduct utility work. This has left nearby homeowners feeling frustrated and concerned about the potential environmental impact of the mining center.
Somerville homeowner Carlee Carlton expressed her concerns, saying that the project poses a threat to their livelihoods and creates a danger to their environment. She noted that the area is prone to flooding and contains endangered species, which could be affected by the construction process.
Carlton also criticized VoltCore's approach to the community, stating that it was 'deeply un-American' for the company to disregard the concerns of local residents in pursuit of profit.
