Wall Street Firms Spend Big on Bitcoin and Ethereum Amid Market Optimism
Three prominent Wall Street firms have made significant purchases of Bitcoin and Ethereum in recent weeks. Strive, BitMine, and MicroStrategy each disclosed fresh crypto acquisitions on Monday, with the two Bitcoin buyers alone spending over $500 million in a single week.
The mechanism behind this business model is straightforward: these companies turn share sales into coins, and shares tend to sell best when coin prices are rising. This was evident in Strive's latest filing, which showed that after issuing 3,579,147 new Class A shares, the company's cash balance still climbed by $11.6 million to $183.5 million.
BitMine is taking a different approach, with its 65th consecutive week of buying Ether (ETH) totaling 53,501 tokens at an average price of $75,412. Notably, BitMine has staked 5,067,309 ETH through MAVAN, its American validator network, with Chairman Tom Lee projecting annual yields of $335 million to $390 million.
The companies' purchases are likely driven by growing optimism in the market, as crypto funds drew a record $3.2 billion in inflows last week, according to Bank of America. This surge in demand is lifting coin prices, which in turn is boosting treasury stocks and enabling these firms to buy more coins.
Despite some volatility in August, with the Nasdaq 100 up 4.2% and the Treasury widening long-dated bond buybacks, the rotation towards crypto assets shows no signs of slowing down.
