Wall Street Sees Mixed Results Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
Wall Street experienced a mixed bag of news on Wednesday, with some companies exceeding expectations while others disappointed investors.
Walmart reported U.S. comparable sales growth of 2.6%, falling short of the 3.8% forecasted by Wall Street. The company modestly raised its full-year outlook but failed to alleviate investor concerns about weaker discretionary spending and a more cautious consumer.
The disappointing news from Walmart has significant implications, as it is often seen as a gauge of U.S. consumer health.
In contrast, Alibaba saw its net profit drop around 75% in the latest quarter due to increased spending on artificial intelligence (AI). The company's capital expenditure jumped roughly 75%, with investments made in data centers, advanced chips, and cloud infrastructure.
Despite this short-term pressure, Alibaba appears willing to absorb it in order to compete in the global AI race.
On a more positive note, Coinbase saw a rally as Bitcoin pushed back above $70,000. The exchange benefited from easing concerns around bond market liquidity and growing optimism about potential U.S. crypto legislation.
The rise in oil prices for a fifth consecutive session was also notable, with tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz keeping supply concerns elevated.
Finally, Deere raised its 2026 profit forecast after reporting an increase in construction and forestry sales, driven partly by infrastructure spending tied to AI data center expansion.
