Wall Street's $16 Billion Bitcoin Loss: Will August 14 Filings Reveal Durable Capital or Momentum Capital?
Wall Street's Bitcoin ETF losses have reached $16.3 billion after an average net cost basis of $82,249 left positions about 22% underwater.
The August 14 deadline for institutional disclosure will reveal whether these large investment managers held or added to their share counts despite the second-quarter drawdown.
Per Bloomberg Intelligence estimates, this breakeven level is almost identical to Citi's revised 12-month Bitcoin target of $82,000, which was reduced from $112,000 in July.
The cumulative net inflows since launch of US-traded spot Bitcoin ETFs total nearly $51.6 billion, with a $233.1 million influx on July 30, but recent stress periods saw outflows totaling about $4.36 billion from May 15 to June 3 and $4.51 billion in June.
The August 14 filings will capture positions as of June 30, when the worst of the outflow stretch had passed, and include a caveat that SEC guidance excludes short positions and written options entirely.
