Wall Street's Blockchain Shift: A Mispriced Opportunity
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes that investors are failing to recognize the scale of Wall Street's move towards blockchain-based infrastructure. Hougan argues that anchoring bias is preventing both traditional and crypto investors from acknowledging this shift.
In his latest memo, Hougan highlighted several developments that demonstrate a fundamental change in how traditional finance engages with blockchain technology. These include SEC Chairman Paul Atkins' 'Project Crypto,' which aims to modernize securities regulation for on-chain markets, and BlackRock's launch of its $2 billion BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund on Uniswap.
Other major players such as Apollo, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and Fidelity are also actively exploring blockchain-based initiatives. Hougan noted that despite these moves, traditional investors have failed to register the changes, while even crypto investors exhibit fatigue from repeated claims of institutional adoption.
Hougan attributed this disconnect to anchoring bias, pointing out that tokenized real-world assets have grown sharply since 2020, but questions remain about where value will accrue. He concluded by framing the disconnect as an investment opportunity rather than a market failure, and argued that there is 'a large delta between what people think is happening in crypto and what is actually happening.'
