Wall Street's Quiet Blockchain Revolution
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that traditional investors and crypto enthusiasts alike are anchored on outdated narratives about Wall Street's adoption of blockchain-based infrastructure. According to Hougan, this anchoring bias is preventing both groups from recognizing the scale of the structural shift underway.
Hougan points to recent developments as evidence of this shift. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins' 'Project Crypto' aims to modernize securities regulation for on-chain markets, while BlackRock CEO Larry Fink says the industry is entering the early stages of tokenizing all assets. To that end, BlackRock has launched its $2 billion BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund on Uniswap (UNI), and Apollo has tokenized its $700 billion Diversified Credit Fund across six blockchains.
Major banks are also taking steps into the space, with JPMorgan launching a deposit token on Base and discussing a joint stablecoin with other major players. Fidelity is hiring a DeFi vaults manager to oversee this growing sector.
Hougan believes that traditional investors have failed to register these changes due to their anchoring bias, while crypto enthusiasts are suffering from fatigue after repeated claims of institutional adoption. He notes that tokenized real-world assets have grown sharply since 2020 and argues that there is a 'large delta between what people think is happening in crypto and what is actually happening.'
In his memo, Hougan framed the disconnect as an investment opportunity rather than simply a market failure. He wrote that building broad exposure to the space rather than attempting to pick individual winners could be a lucrative strategy.
