Wall Street's Quiet Blockchain Revolution
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues that investors are missing a fundamental shift in how traditional finance engages with blockchain technology. He claims that anchoring bias is preventing both traditional and crypto investors from recognizing the scale of Wall Street's move toward blockchain-based infrastructure.
Hougan points to several developments as evidence of this shift, including SEC Chairman Paul Atkins' 'Project Crypto' initiative, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink's statement on tokenizing all assets, and major banks discussing a joint stablecoin. Notably, JPMorgan has already launched a deposit token on Base, while Fidelity is hiring a DeFi vaults manager.
Despite these moves, Hougan says traditional investors have failed to register the changes, and even crypto investors are exhibiting fatigue from repeated claims of institutional adoption. He attributes this to anchoring bias, where investors fixate on initial information and fail to adapt to new developments.
Hougan sees the disconnect between perception and reality as an investment opportunity rather than a market failure. He notes that there is 'a large delta between what people think is happening in crypto and what is actually happening' and argues that this gap favors building broad exposure to the space rather than attempting to pick individual winners.
