Waller Skeptical on Communications Task Force Amid Fed Unity Crack
Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller expressed skepticism about the newly formed communications task force at the Bank of Italy in Rome on July 6. He stated that the central bank already has a strong communications framework and questioned whether the task force will produce significant results.
The task force, led by former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, former Central Bank of Brazil Governor Arminio Fraga, and Peter Fisher, aims to evaluate how the Fed communicates with the public and markets, including forward guidance and press conferences. Their mandate is to provide recommendations by the end of 2026.
Waller described forward guidance as 'more art than science,' citing the post-COVID period of 2020-2021 as a cautionary tale. During this time, the Fed had committed to keeping interest rates low, which ultimately constrained its ability to respond when inflation accelerated faster than expected.
This public skepticism represents a visible crack in the Fed's institutional unity under Chairman Kevin Warsh's new leadership. Waller has previously dissented on a rate decision in January 2026, signaling that he is willing to break with the majority when he disagrees.
