Wallet of Satoshi Abandons Custodial Service for Self-Custody Bitcoin Wallets
Wallet of Satoshi has made a significant shift in its business model by transitioning from a custodial service to a self-custody framework for Bitcoin wallets. This change marks a major move towards decentralization and user empowerment, aligning with the core principles of Bitcoin.
The company's decision comes as part of a broader trend in the cryptocurrency industry towards self-custody, driven by growing awareness of risks associated with centralized control of digital assets. The collapse of several major custodial exchanges has highlighted the importance of users holding their own private keys.
Wallet of Satoshi is rolling out this new service gradually, starting with key markets such as the US, EU, Australia, and New Zealand. Existing users have until June 30, 2027, to migrate their balances to the new self-custody wallet. During this period, they can continue to send and receive funds through existing Lightning addresses.
The shift to a self-custody model has implications for the Lightning Network ecosystem as well, making it more decentralized and aligning with Bitcoin's original vision as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. This could lead to further innovation and adoption as users gain confidence in the security of their funds.
