Warren Demands Answers on UAE Export Controls After Trump Crypto Deal
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick demanding an explanation for the Trump administration's decision to ease export controls on the UAE, citing hundreds of millions of dollars in investments from UAE-linked entities into President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial.
The move allows the UAE government and companies linked to Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's national security advisor, to gain easier access to advanced-computing hardware. Warren argued that this reclassification breaks with past practice because every other country in the same export-control category participates in at least one of four major international export-control agreements, the UAE does not.
Warren also pointed out that Sheikh Tahnoon sought approvals to import advanced AI chips in meetings with U.S. officials after investing in World Liberty Financial, and asked how Commerce would prevent controlled technology from reaching prohibited users. She posed seven sets of questions and called for both Lutnick and Jeffrey Kessler, head of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security, to testify before Congress.
The Trump administration has defended the move by pointing to the UAE's role as a significant American defense partner. However, Warren raised concerns about the potential influence the President's cryptocurrency business interests may be having on the agency's operations and national security.
