Warren Probes US Commerce Department Over UAE Chip Policy Changes

Senator Elizabeth Warren has requested an explanation from the US Commerce Department regarding its policy towards the UAE, specifically after investments linked to the Trump family's cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial.

A letter sent by Warren to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick asks for clarification on why the department reclassified the UAE as Country Group A:5, granting it greater access to license-free exports including advanced chips. The move would allow UAE entities to obtain more AI chips without needing a special license.

This change in policy comes after two significant investments were made by UAE-linked companies in World Liberty Financial and Binance. An Abu Dhabi entity backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan invested $500 million in January, while another company linked to the UAE settled a $2 billion investment in crypto exchange Binance using World Liberty's USD1 stablecoin.

Warren expressed concerns that the administration's policies may be influenced by President Trump's cryptocurrency business interests. The senator argued that this raises 'significant questions' about potential national security risks and the impact on the agency's operations.
