Warren Targets Trump's Cryptocurrency Venture with Banking Reform Bill

Share

Democratic lawmakers, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, have introduced legislation aimed at preventing potential conflicts of interest between public office and private banking. The bill targets the approval of a national trust bank charter for World Liberty Trust Company, linked to President Donald Trump's family cryptocurrency venture.

The proposed Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act would restrict regulators from approving certain banking applications involving presidents, vice presidents, members of Congress, specified executive officials, and their immediate family members. The bill also prohibits a president, vice president, or their spouse or children from owning or controlling a bank.

President Trump's administration has promoted cryptocurrency and stablecoins, with the USD1 stablecoin reaching a market value of around $4 billion by June. World Liberty Financial, the company behind the stablecoin, has generated over $1.4 billion for Trump and his family by April.

The OCC recently conditionally approved World Liberty Trust Company's national trust charter application, but the final approval is still pending. The OCC noted that a Trump-affiliated entity agreed not to seek board seats or control the bank, with ownership of 10% or more held solely for investment purposes.
