Warren Vows to Push for Crypto Regulation Despite Clarity Act Concerns
Senator Elizabeth Warren has expressed her determination to pass cryptocurrency legislation that addresses illicit finance and investor protection, despite not supporting the current Clarity Act. The Massachusetts Democrat believes that any bill should include rules governing public officials' crypto investments, protect national security and consumers, and strengthen efforts to combat illicit finance and terrorism.
Warren's stance on crypto regulation could be crucial if Democrats maintain control of the Senate after November elections. If they succeed, she would likely lead the Senate Banking Committee, which plays a key role in regulating digital assets.
Regarding her potential leadership, Warren said she would 'be happy to sit down with other Democrats, with the Republicans, and with the industry and hammer out a meaningful crypto bill.' However, she noted that it would require Republicans' willingness to stand up to President Donald Trump, which she described as a 'pretty tall order.'
The Clarity Act has been met with resistance from Democrats due to its lack of enforceable ethics provisions. The current language allows state attorneys general to sue crypto exchanges and the Justice Department, but Warren believes this is insufficient given that the Justice Department would decide whether to bring an enforcement action against the president.
