Warsh's Hawkish Message Sparks $3,000 Bitcoin Sell-Off

The Bitcoin price experienced its first major macro setback after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish message at Jackson Hole on Friday. Despite remaining stable during the speech, it plummeted by $3,000 in hours after its conclusion, slipping below $77,000 for the first time in almost a week.

Warsh emphasized that inflation remains too high, with the US economy still strong and the Federal Reserve's preferred PCE inflation gauge standing at 3.7% YoY and six-month annualized rate at 4.1%. He dismissed some of the most promising inflation readings this summer, stating that they had not convinced him and his colleagues that the underlying trend had improved significantly.

The speech led to a significant increase in the odds of a rate hike in September, jumping from one-third probability before the speech to 60% after its conclusion. This shift pushed Treasury yields upward, strengthening the dollar and tightening broader financial conditions. History shows that such an environment is not ideal for Bitcoin and more speculative altcoins.
