Warsh's Jackson Hole Debut: Will Bitcoin Repeat the 2022 Price Drop?
Bitcoin traders are bracing for the impact of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's debut at the Jackson Hole Symposium, scheduled for Friday. The event is reminiscent of August 2022, when Jerome Powell's speech led to a 6% drop in Bitcoin price. However, an analysis of eight years' worth of data shows that 2022 was an outlier.
According to BeInCrypto, the median reaction to Fed chair keynotes since 2018 has been a gain of 1%. Seven out of the eight moves fell within a 5% band. Only 2022 broke this range, resulting in a drop worse than 2%. The reason for the extreme reaction in 2022 was surprise, as traders expected relief from Powell's speech but instead received a pledge of economic pain.
Warsh's speech could still deliver a hawkish tone, despite his efforts to frame it as an opportunity to 'widen the lens' rather than signal a rate hike. The Federal Reserve has kept rates at 3.50% to 3.75%, and inflation remains a concern, with July's figure holding steady at 3.4%. A September Fed hike is still a possibility, making Warsh's speech a crucial event for traders.
