Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech Triggers Market Shift: September Hike Probabilities Rise
The Federal Reserve's September rate expectations have been reshaped by Chairman Kevin Warsh's recent speech at Jackson Hole. Before his remarks, traders were largely positioned for steady borrowing costs with a probability of a September hike standing near 34%. However, after the speech, estimates showed that September hike probabilities rising from roughly 34%-40% to between 55% and 61%. This significant shift in expectations was triggered by Warsh's comments on inflation and the economy.
The Fed's preferred Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE) measured annual inflation at 3.7% in July, with half of the items within the PCE basket rising above 3% annually. Warsh emphasized that policymakers must gain assurance that underlying inflation is moving toward 2% at an appropriate pace.
The market responded quickly to Warsh's statements, with gold dropping over 3%, silver falling over 4%, and U.S. equities declining as well. Crypto markets also joined the broader selloff. The Fed's stance has now shifted from a potential hold or pause in rates to a possible hike, making it crucial for traders to reposition.
