Washington Events Spark Cryptocurrency Rally Despite No Direct Mention
Bitcoin surged to over $77,000 on August 21, marking a significant rally that began with a short squeeze on August 19. The market's focus turned to two Washington events that occurred on the same day: the Treasury Department announced plans to increase its long-end bond buyback operations and President Trump hosted crypto and prediction-market executives at the White House.
However, neither event mentioned Bitcoin directly. Instead, Treasury attributed the move to 'strong sponsorship from market participants' in the market for long-dated government debt, while Trump's comments centered on passing the Clarity Act digital-asset legislation.
A short squeeze on August 19 resulted in over $3 billion in short positions being liquidated in a single continuous move, with Bitcoin shorts accounting for approximately $1.6 billion of that total. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $517 million on August 19 and $606 million on August 20, indicating institutional and retail demand moving through regulated funds.
Despite the lack of direct connection made by Treasury or the White House to Bitcoin's price surge, the market still drew a link between the events. Two things would be needed to undercut this narrative: a statement from Treasury or the White House explicitly linking their actions to supporting crypto markets or derivatives data showing that the squeeze was accelerated after the buyback news broke.
