Washington Stalls on Crypto Rules as Bitcoin Struggles Above $63,000
Bitcoin's price has been struggling to gain momentum above $63,000 due to setbacks in cryptocurrency regulation in Washington and renewed outflows from US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) is a proposed legislation aimed at establishing a clearer regulatory structure for cryptocurrency markets in the US. However, its progress has been stalled due to political disagreements and Senate Majority Leader John Thune's indication that lawmakers will return to the legislation in September.
Regulatory uncertainty was compounded when the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) cancelled an open meeting scheduled for August 14, which would have considered potential exemptions for cryptocurrency businesses to raise capital. The cancellation of this meeting has added to the existing uncertainty surrounding the CLARITY Act.
The latest data shows that US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $389.7 million in net outflows between August 10 and August 14. This comes after periods of substantial institutional inflows into cryptocurrency investment products, indicating that investors have become more cautious.
