Water Worries Grow as AI and Bitcoin Mining Expansion Continues
The growing demand for AI data centers and Bitcoin mining is putting new pressure on water resources. Both industries rely heavily on cooling systems that require large amounts of water, making local water availability a key factor in approving new computing projects.
According to estimates, U.S. data centers consumed around 228 billion gallons of water in 2023, compared to approximately 2.9 trillion gallons used for lawn irrigation. This highlights the significant impact these industries have on water consumption.
The expansion of AI infrastructure and Bitcoin mining is also driven by economic factors. Weak Bitcoin fee revenue has led some miners to explore alternative computing opportunities, including AI-related infrastructure. However, this shift raises questions about the security of the Bitcoin network if miners continue to migrate away from it.
