Weak Jobs Report Triggers Gold Surge, Cryptocurrency Stability
A weak US jobs report has led to a significant reduction in expectations for interest rate hikes, causing gold prices to surge and cryptocurrency markets to stabilize.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a decrease of 2.3 million non-farm payroll positions in July, far below the expected increase of around 9 million. This unexpected drop in employment has led to a decline in inflation expectations, resulting in lower interest rates.
As a result, gold prices have broken through the $4,400 per ounce barrier and reached a new high, while cryptocurrency markets have seen an increase in stability. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have both seen price movements within expected ranges, with BTC at around $64,900 and ETH at around $1,914.
The jobs report has also had a significant impact on the stock market, with major indices seeing gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.28%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.62% to reach a new high. The Nasdaq Composite Index saw an increase of 1.30%
In terms of individual stocks, Nvidia (NVDA) and Tesla (TSLA) both saw significant gains, with NVDA rising 2.27% and TSLA increasing by 2.83%. Alphabet (GOOGL), however, saw a decline of 0.96%, while Amazon (AMZN) gained 0.82%
The weak jobs report has also led to an increase in the value of the US dollar, with the USD Index reaching 99.64.
