Web3's Financial Privacy Crisis: Exposing Balance Sheets Puts Users at Risk
The debate over financial privacy in Web3 has taken a significant turn with the release of a joint report by CoinRabbit and ChangeNOW. The report, titled 'Financial Privacy in the Digital Age,' argues that financial privacy is not mutually exclusive with regulatory compliance.
Citing data from various sources, including TRM Labs and Chainalysis, the report highlights the risks associated with public blockchains, which expose users' balance sheets in real-time. This has led to a surge in physical coercion and 'wrench attacks,' where malicious actors target high-net-worth crypto holders.
The report notes that 52 verified wrench attacks exposed $124.1 million in H1 2026, a nearly twelvefold increase compared to H1 2025. France emerged as a primary hotspot, with institutional data leaks allowing criminals to match physical home addresses to wallet holdings.
