Weekend Liquidity Gaps Devastate ETF Investors
The launch of US spot Bitcoin ETFs has brought a new level of institutional capital and liquidity to the market. However, this has also created an uneven trade-off. On weekdays, when the NYSE is open, these funds provide easier brokerage access and narrower spreads, making it easier for investors to enter or exit positions. But outside of regular trading hours, including on weekends, liquidity becomes thinner, and the fund's price can be subject to significant gaps.
This phenomenon occurs because Bitcoin continues to trade globally 24/7, processing events such as geopolitical announcements, oil price changes, and interest rate decisions from around the world. When these events occur during thin weekend hours, they can cause sharp price moves that are reflected in the fund's price when trading resumes on Monday.
For example, if a major event happens on Saturday, Bitcoin may fall across global exchanges, leading to a larger-than-expected price move by Monday morning. The ETF fund will then reopen at a new price that reflects this accumulated move, creating a gap between the Friday and Monday prices.
