Wells Fargo Enters Tokenization Space with 24/7 Deposits
Wells Fargo is set to launch tokenized deposits that will allow its corporate and commercial clients to move, program, and settle funds around the clock within a regulated framework.
The bank's plans are part of a growing trend on Wall Street as traditional financial firms adopt tokenization. Wells Fargo CFO Mike Santomassimo described the planned launch as an 'important step forward' that expands its payment options.
Tokenized deposits will leverage Wells Fargo's blockchain platform, which supports in-house custodial wallets and inter-chain connectivity technology. The program will initially roll out for select participating clients for USD-to-GBP transactions before expanding to all eligible clients and additional currencies throughout 2027.
This move follows similar announcements from JPMorgan and Citigroup, which are also embracing tokenization. BlackRock has also been actively pursuing tokenization, launching two tokenized money funds earlier this week as part of its efforts to set up these funds as ideal reserve assets for GENIUS-compliant stablecoin issuers.
Wells Fargo is also participating in the DTCC tokenization trial to tokenize stocks and U.S. Treasuries, with plans to begin the formal tokenization program in October.
