Wells Fargo Quietly Builds Institutional Crypto Exposure Amid Retail Restrictions
Wells Fargo allows debit card purchases on third-party cryptocurrency exchanges but prohibits using credit cards for any crypto transactions. By Q2 2026, Wells Fargo's total Bitcoin ETF holdings had reached approximately $1 billion across IBIT, GBTC, and BITB.
The bank increased Ether ETF positions to 1.1 million BlackRock ETHA shares in Q1 2026, a 63.5 percent increase from the previous quarter, while slightly trimming its Bitcoin ETF position. Wells Fargo's investment in Ethereum rose by $21.5 million in the same period.
The bank operates under OCC and Federal Reserve oversight, which limits direct crypto service offerings currently. However, the SEC's approval of spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs in 2024 has opened institutional exposure pathways. The CLARITY Act could bring regulatory clarity and potentially expand what banks may offer retail customers.
