WEMIX Investigates Potential Breach of WEMIX$ Stablecoin Contract
WEMIX is facing another security concern as it investigates a potential breach involving its WEMIX$ stablecoin contract. The incident, disclosed on July 26, has raised questions about the platform's security posture after a damaging hack earlier this year.
The WEMIX$ stablecoin is fully collateralized by USDC and runs on the WEMIX3.0 mainnet. It was initially intended to provide stable and predictable transactions for users who want to avoid exposure to the volatility of WEMIX itself.
However, Wemade had already announced plans to transition away from WEMIX$ in favor of USDC.e, suggesting that the stablecoin was on a sunset track.
The potential breach comes after a hack in February 2025, where attackers drained approximately 8.65 million WEMIX tokens from the Play Bridge Vault, worth around $6.1 to $6.2 million at the time. The incident highlighted concerns about the platform's security and led to allegations that WEMIX attempted to downplay or cover up the incident.
The current investigation is focused on the ownership of the WEMIX$ contract, which represents a different attack surface than the February hack attributed to compromised authentication keys.
