West Kootenay Residents Reject Data Warehouses Amid Concerns Over Energy Consumption
The residents of West Kootenay's Area A have spoken out against data warehouses and Bitcoin mining facilities, calling for restrictions on their growth. At a public hearing on August 13, dozens of residents attended and expressed concerns about high electricity and water usage, noise pollution from cooling equipment, generators, and transmission infrastructure.
According to World Resources Institute, data centers are becoming increasingly energy-hungry as technology advances. A single modern AI data center can use as much power as 100,000 homes, with some larger ones consuming up to 20 times that amount.
However, tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have made strides in reducing water usage by phasing out traditional evaporative cooling towers and transitioning toward zero-wastewater technologies. Despite this progress, concerns remain about the impact of data warehouses on local communities.
