Western Union Taps VISA for Stablecoin Remittance Wallet Expansion
Western Union has launched StableCard, a digital wallet and VISA-branded payment card that allows users to hold, send, and spend its U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, USDPT. The service is developed with stablecoin infrastructure provider, Rain, and will be available in 37 markets initially, expanding to over 60 by year-end.
Users can receive Western Union transfers directly into a USDPT wallet, transfer funds to compatible crypto wallets, and spend balances anywhere VISA is accepted, including through Apple Pay and Google Pay. This move follows Western Union's introduction of USDPT in May 2026 under the U.S. GENIUS Act framework.
Western Union is not alone in this effort; rival MoneyGram has also entered the market with its MGUSD stablecoin on Stellar as remittance providers look to offer faster dollar-based transfers and savings options in high-inflation economies. According to Soohoo, CEO of MoneyGram, the company has shifted from experimenting with blockchain to integrating it into its global payments infrastructure.
