Western Union's Stablecoin Play: Automating Its Own Margin Destruction
Western Union, the 173-year-old remittance giant, has launched Stablecard across 37 markets on August 4, 2026. The new service connects Western Union's USDPT stablecoin on Solana to the global Visa payment network's 175 million merchant locations.
The USDPT stablecoin is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and provides near-instant settlement at a fraction of a cent, with median transaction fees under $0.01 on Solana.
Western Union charges an effective 5.96% on a $500 transfer, including FX markup. However, stablecoin-based remittances compress fees from the global average of 6.49% to under 1%, raising questions about whether Western Union is building its own obsolescence.
